Horse rugs and saddle cloths along with any gear needs to be regularly cleaned and maintained. The things our horses lay in (manure and urine) contribute to the breaking down of the fibers in fabrics contributing to premature deterioration. Sweat and body oil in your rugs needs to be removed regularly as well. All of these things contribute to rugs not breathing as they should. When your rug does not breath, your horse can become clammy, wet and cold. This is called wetting out.
Unfortunately, our domestic washing machines are not designed to wash these items. Domestic detergents can be irritating to horses skin, can damage the waterproofing in your rugs and normally contain enzymes that can attract dirt. Horse rugs and suds only use detergents that have been specifically formulated for the purpose of washing horse rugs and are environmentally friendly. We use a front load industrial washer extractor that has been purchased specifically for washing horse rugs and therefore pre-programmed for this purpose.
